The Area 18 Special Olympics team will be hosting an upcoming “Fun Day” at Fort Young Park on Sunday, May 19th, at 2 PM. In years’ past, the Special Olympics Team has traveled to Richmond to participate in the Summer Games. However, this year, they opted instead to create their own event which they’re calling “Fun Day.”
The “Fun Day” event will include several sporting competitions including softball, cornhole, and bocce ball, to be played by the Area 18 Special Olympics team against others in and around the area. It will also include a covered dish meal featuring hot dogs. The best part? Everything is completely free! The Area 18 Special Olympics team asks only for the community’s support, so come on out on May 19th to support this talented group of local athletes.
At its core, the Area 18 Special Olympics organization is a beacon of hope and inclusivity, shining a light on the incredible abilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities. For years, they have been dedicated to empowering athletes of all ages and skill levels, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents, build confidence, and forge unbreakable bonds with their peers. By fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding, the leaders of the Area 18 Special Olympics team have created a safe and supportive environment where participants can truly thrive.
The emphasis will not be on winning or losing, but on the sheer joy of participating, the thrill of competing, and the sense of belonging that naturally comes with being a part of a community that celebrates their abilities and athleticism. By celebrating the achievements of these athletes, the Area 18 Special Olympics team sends a powerful message: everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and valued for who they are and for the unique contributions they make to the world.
During “Fun Day” on May 19th, anyone with intellectual disabilities who are interested in Special Olympics are invited to participate in the day’s events.
