Built in Roanoke in 1950, the Class J No. 611 remains a proud symbol of our railroad legacy. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, I had the privilege of presenting a Congressional Record plaque to Mendy Flynn at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

On Wednesday night, November 15, the newly created Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity Lady Cougars’ teams played back-to-back scrimmage games at Clifton Academy. In both matchups, the girls’ basketball teams played against the Christiansburg Blue Demons.

At exactly 5:30 p.m., the JV girls stood in center court awaiting the tip-off. There was a lot of back-and-forth throughout the game as both teams initially struggled to put points on the scoreboard. However, late in the game, the Blue Demons pulled ahead and stole the scrimmage away from the Cougars.

Afterwards, it was Varsity’s turn to take on the Blue Demons. However, no official score was kept, as the scoreboard was reset after each period. However, with it being the first official game of the season, scrimmage or not, the Varsity girls played well together and were able to put several points on the board.

Both teams of athletes are off to a good start! Both worked well and played well together, so it’ll be interesting to see what the rest of the season has in store. In the fall, fans and spectators alike were privileged to see how well the newly merged schools fared in athletics and it seems basketball is going to be no exception!

As usual, the student section showed up to cheer on the team while parents sported their Alleghany Cougar tees and hats. Players wore their brand-new blue-on-blue jerseys and matching shorts, getting in a few extra minutes of layup practice and drills shortly before the night began. Music blasted over the speaker in-between games, marking the start of a brand-new season of girls’ basketball for the high schoolers.

The next games are scrimmage games scheduled for Tuesday night, November 21 for girls’ and boys’ basketball, both JV and Varsity. The girls are traveling to Lord Botetourt, with the JV game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the Varsity game starting at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the boys are traveling to Hidden Valley, with their JV game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and Varsity at 7:00 p.m.
