The Alleghany Cougars varsity and junior varsity (JV) volleyball teams celebrated tremendous victories over the Patrick County Cougars, once again boosting their impressive records this season. The matches took place at Clifton Academy on Thursday night, September 14th, with JV starting things off at 5:30 p.m. and Varsity playing at 7 p.m.

The Varsity team triumphed, bringing their season record to an impressive 12-2 as several students packed the stands with giant, plastic Alleghany cards, rooting on this dynamic team of girls. Their victory underscores the team’s consistent performance this season and their dedication to excellence. The Lady Cougars have shown incredible resilience and demonstrated strategic dominance, thus solidifying themselves as formidable competitors.

The matches, nailbiters at times and too-close-to-call in others, were ultimately dominated by both teams of Lady Cougars. “We kinda play in spurts sometimes,” said Varsity Head Coach Charles Leitch when asked about the edge-of-your-seat first set. The score, so close the girls were forced to play over, wound up being won by the Lady Cougars who dominated the sets in a 3-0 victory over the Patrick County Cougars.

Meanwhile, the JV team continued its undefeated streak, pushing their record to an untarnished 14-0. This young team has demonstrated an unmatched level of skill and teamwork, outperforming their competitors time and time again this season. Head Coach Kelsey Young stated, “We’re working on our skills and perfecting everything and today, we had a little bit more competition and the girls ended up shutting them down. I told them, ‘As long as you can shut them down in the beginning, you’re good to go.’” With her team’s unblemished streak going stronger than ever and seemingly having no stopping point, one can only assume that Young’s coaching methods are unblemished as well.

The JV and Varsity’s recent victories against Patrick County have set high standards for the remainder of the season and what you can expect from these powerhouses in the games to come. Between Varsity’s strong record and JV’s undefeated streak, the Alleghany Lady Cougars are poised for continued success!

Their next matches are scheduled for Monday, September 18, at Rockbridge County High School against the Wildcats. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m. while Varsity follows immediately after at 7 p.m.

*The Virginian Review would like to extend our well wishes to the Alleghany player who was injured late in the game. Because we wish to respect the privacy of this student athlete, we will not mention her name at this time.
