Barbara Riley Hurt
Barbara Riley Hurt, also known as “Ma Hurt”, age 90, of 204 Slate Run Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at her residence.
Barbara was born February 3, 1933, in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late Frances Aloysius Riley and Christine Rose Riley. She was a graduate of Central High School in 1950 and attended Dunsmore Business College in Staunton, Virginia in 1951. She remained in touch with her fellow classmates from high school and helped facilitate numerous class reunions. In 1956, she married B.H. Hurt who was in the Navy. His tours of duty took them to London, Spain and Virginia Beach. In 1970 she returned to Clifton Forge and worked at Wood Chevrolet until 1980. She then went to work for Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Accounting and worked there until her retirement in 2003. Barbara always said she enjoyed her experience of traveling and living in the large cities but was so glad to come home to the mountains.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James C. Riley; and son-in-law, Bruce Barnette.
She is survived by her five children, William Hurt and wife Stephanie, James “Shorty” Hurt, Connie Barnette, Robin Wright and husband Gene, and David Hurt and wife Angie; four grandchildren, Cory Wright and wife Adrianne, Meghan Lowry and husband Brian, Carrigan Wright, and Elizabeth Barnette; four great-grandchildren, Elsie Wright, Everleigh Wright, Ivy Barnette, and Janson Lowry; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Bill Gilliland. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Church Cemetery, Clifton Forge. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.
