The USDA Forest Service is opening the Sugar Ridge campground in the Bolar Mountain area for the Fourth of July holiday. Sugar Ridge, located in Bath County, provides 36 campsites, one group picnic facility, and is open on a first-come, first served basis. This campground has been closed for three years due to deferred maintenance needs. Amenities are limited, portable toilets will be available within Sugar Ridge for the foreseeable future while staff strives to resume normal restroom services.
The wastewater treatment plant at Bolar Mountain is now providing full water services, including showers and flush toilets after sedimentation in the system slowed services earlier this year.
“The public has really supported our efforts to upgrade and improve the services we can provide at Lake Moomaw this summer, said James River and Warm Springs District Ranger Kevin Kyle. “Our volunteers, staff, and partner agencies have worked very hard this summer to meet public demand for these iconic recreation sites.”
