Since 1985, the U.S. has recognized July as National Parks and Recreation Month. To celebrate and to highlight the health benefits of hiking, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA Healthy Highlands program, Clifton Forge Main Street and the Clifton Forge Parks and Trails Committee are sponsoring “Hike the Forge” during the month of July.
“Hiking offers benefits for both the mind and body,” said Dr. Sandra McHenry, the Healthy Highlands program leader. “It’s an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, while also improving strength, endurance and flexibility. In addition, spending time outdoors reduces stress and is linked to overall improved well-being.”
Clifton Forge has several trails within its town limits, so one does not need to venture far to enjoy the benefits of hiking. Hazel Run Trail, Fairmont Trail, Smith Creek Trail and Lovers’ Walk are four trails within Clifton Forge.
Hike all four trails to be registered to win a $100 gift card from Ace Hardware. The first five hikers to complete this challenge will receive a Clifton Forge Main Street T-shirt, and all completers will get an “I Hiked the Forge” token.
