COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The many colors of Covington High School, blue and gold, blue and white and blue and yellow, could be seen throughout the Depot on May 13 when the Alleghany Historical Society and the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society teamed up to honor CHS as they merge schools with Alleghany High School and become the Alleghany Cougars, donning navy and Columbia blue colors.
Tributes were paid to two iconic teachers at CHS. Longtime teacher and football coach, Boodie Albert, was truly a legend in his own time and touched many players’ lives on and off the field. Albert came to CHS at a young age, bringing with him the blue and gold of Notre Dame. Tribute was also paid to Nell Fleshman, band and choir director for many years at Covington High School. She too touched the lives of so many young people who showed great respect for Fleshman.
Gary Wayne Twitty was also honored as he is an icon to staff and students alike in the new generation. Twitty is a 43-year veteran maintenance expert. He graduated from CHS in 1980 and immediately went to work there. Twitty takes great pride in his school and is well respected by all. He will stay on in that role at the Covington Middle School. Twitty was inducted into the 2022 Covington High School Hall of Fame class.
The “Then and Now” theme began with the donation of a picture of the first CHS football team in 1912. Below the 2022 football team can be found. The old and new high schools can be seen side by side in a showcase of blue and gold.
One of the highlights of the display is four CHS band jackets from 1987 to the 2000s. The white ones partner well with the 12th CHS birthday banner. The perfect background for the CHS tribute.
The display can be seen at the Depot Tuesdays from 12:30-4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Stop by and take a stroll down memory lane with yearbooks dating from 1925 to 2022.
Cougars forever.
