COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – On Saturday, May 13, between 1 and 4 p.m., the Alleghany Historical Society will partner with the Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society to pay tribute to Covington High School then and now. The event will be held at Covington C&O Depot.
Many items have been given to make this a special event. A picture of the first Covington High School football team in 1912 is partnered with one of the 2022-2023 team. A vintage picture of the Covington High School building in 1921 is showcased with a present-day photo. The CHS band jackets of the 1970s can be compared to those of the 2000s. The icons of past days at the school will be seen in photos both then and now.
New items are being added daily, and if anyone has any “treasures” from then or now, organizers would appreciate the addition to the display.
Pictures of students taken by Charles Hammond during his tenure at CHS will be presented by the Genealogical Society.
Light refreshments will be served.
There are also other permanent displays at the Depot: quilts made in the 1910s and 1920s and the extensive train set from the Horton Beirne Estate which includes many train cars reminiscent of the area and hidden treasures.
