COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033 and Boys Home of Virginia have collaborated in an effort to teach the Boys Home students about patriotism. Last September, Commander Shawn Wright and Quartermaster Bill Atherholt presented a flag burning ceremony on campus in which students actively participated.
On Monday, March 13, Boys Home program director Kenny Bess invited the Post to discuss the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance. Wright presented a history of the pledge, starting in 1892 when it was written by Francis Bellamy as a way for the country to honor the deep respect and bond between citizens and their homeland.
Next, “How to Explain the Pledge of Allegiance to Kids,” was presented to the students.
The ceremony concluded with everyone in attendance reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag together.
