Lewisburg, WV – Carnegie Hall’s 2023 Classes & Workshops continue Saturday, March 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, with an Appalachian Heritage Class – Beginner Soapmaking with Tommye Rafes. Rafes is teaching a beginner class that prepares students for her more advanced pouring style classes. This allows students to have a hands-on experience right away, by participating in the introduction-style class followed by a design-your-own soap pour class on the same day.
Beginning Soapmaking uses the cold process (CP) soap-making method. This class gives the student information about oils, butters, fragrances, and essential oils so that students can create their own soaps. Rafes will demonstrate how to make your own all-natural soap from scratch using natural ingredients, how to calculate how much soap is needed to fill a mold, and how to create your own recipes. Each student will go home with a beginner’s recipe for making soap and one bar of homemade soap.
Section 1 takes place on Saturday, March 11, and Section 2 takes place on Saturday, March 18. Both Sections are from 10 a.m. from noon. Cost is $40 ($35 for members). Class size is limited and students must be at least 18 years old.
Once students have taken the beginner class, there are four different pour technique hands-on workshops from which to choose. Two are on the same day as the beginner classes, so students can do all in one day.
Classes include Learn the ‘Drop Swirl’ technique on Saturday, March 11, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., learn the ‘In the Pot Swirl’ technique on Saturday, March 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., learn the ‘One Pot Wonder’ technique on Saturday, April 1, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and learn the ‘Tiger Swirl’ technique on Saturday, April 1, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost for all pour classes is $90/$95 each, with automatic scholarships available for students 50 years of age and over, who pay only $65. Prices include all materials.
