For the second week in a row, the Covington Cougars (2-7/2-2) blew out their opponent following a 46-7 Pioneer District victory over the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs.
After dropping their first seven games of the season, the Cougars bounced back in a big way last Friday by dominating the Parry McCluer Fighting Blues and leaving them feeling the Blues following a 32-0 shutout loss in the final ever Covington High School home varsity football game.
The Cougars used that momentum a week later on the Mustangs.
The Cougars put up points on their first three drives of the game to take a commanding 24-0 lead.
Neeko Jeter, Desmond Jordan, and Purcel Turner each had touchdowns in the first and second half.
The Cougars opened the game with a 10-play drive that was capped off by a five-yard rushing touchdown from Jeter.
After the Mustangs failed to convert on fourth down near midfield, the Cougars took advantage of the field and used just four plays to get back on the scoreboard, this time coming from Turner from 12 yards out. The scoring drive was highlighted by a 27 yard run by Jeter which eventually set up the Turner touchdown.
Already ahead 16 points, the Cougars defense gave the offense another chance to score quickly as Jacob Davis recovered a Mustangs fumble.
Following the fumble, the Cougars on their third straight offensive possession would score, this time coming from Jordan on a 16 yard quarterback keeper. Following Turner’s third straight successful 2pt conversion of the half, the Cougars grabbed a 24-0 lead.
Despite the double digit deficit, the Mustangs weren’t ready to pack it in.
Following an 18-play drive that started on their own 35 yard line, the Mustangs would finally get on the scoreboard late in the second half coming on a Gage Akers 1 yard touchdown run. The drive took up over nine minutes long.
The Cougars led 24-7 at halftime.
In the second half, it was more of the same from the Cougars offense as Jeter, Jordan, and Turner each scored touchdowns once again. In the second half, Rocklynn Phillips was in on two, 2pt conversions.
Jeter finished the game with 94 rushing yards. He had 73 rushing yards alone in the first half.
Meanwhile, Jordan surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for passing yards in the Cougars win over the Mustangs. Jordan of his 114 yards passing on just seven pass completions. Turner added 90 yards rushing with 60 of them coming from the second half and also added four catches for 89 yards all coming from the first half.
The Cougars who are rolling right now with a their two-game win streak look to continue to make a playoff push this Friday when they play at district opponent Craig County (1-5/0-3). A win would give the Cougars three total for the season and could be enough to leapfrog themselves into the playoffs.
