Convict Eight For Violation Of “Dry” Law
Roy Hoke, twice convicted bootlegger, who escaped punishment on one conviction through an error at his trial on one indictment Tuesday, was given a verdict of three months in jail and a fine of $250 on a second indictment by a jury in circuit court late yesterday. The trial of all except one criminal case on the docket for this term of court was completed today, and the civil cases were taken up this afternoon. There have been eight convictions in bootleg cases at the present term of court, the total fines amounting to $1,100 and total sentences to 18 months in jail.

Appeal Made To Judge Haden In Relieving Serious Congestion In Covington Schools
By unanimous vote the school board of Alleghany County directed its clerk to respectfully call to the attention of Judge Benjamin Haden, of the circuit court, to the very serious congestion prevailing in the Covington schools and to take what further action if any should be taken by the board in the matter or a petition to the court for a bond issue election in the Covington magisterial district. Superintendent A.L. Bennett gave his opinion to the board at the meeting that Covington had the poorest school facilities of any town this size he knew of in the state of Virginia.

Area Improvement Is Cited At Meeting
Improvements in Alleghany County and the city of Covington sighted by Delbert Hepler chairman of the Board of Supervisors and Mayor Earl M. Key before members of the Kiwanis at last night’s meeting held in the blue room of the Hotel Collins. Mr. Hepler stated that the county had a lot of catching up on its school system but this will be largely taken care of when the new County High School is completed at Valley Ridge.

Woods To Appear Before Council
Robert C. Woods of Scottland Road, Covington, will appear before Covington City Council Tuesday night to speak on annexation. Woods’ request to urge the council to proceed with the annexation of parts of Alleghany County was submitted to the city manager’s office in time to be placed on the official agenda.

JRTC Students Complete Project
Students enrolled in the Building Maintenance program at Jackson River Technical Center recently completed a project at the school. The students cleaned and painted approximately 300 feet of curb in front of the center with highly visible yellow paint. In the photo below are left to right, Josh Coleman, R.J.
