The James Monroe Mavericks (4-0) remained unbeaten following their 41-22 home victory over the Covington Cougars (0-5) on Friday night.
Unlike last season, the Mavericks did not need a big fourth quarter to hold off the Cougars.
Last season, the Mavericks led 14-9 heading into the final quarter and outscored the Cougars 21-7 to hang onto the lead and the victory.
Layton Dowdy was back at it again for the Mavericks.
The Cougars for the second year in a row had a rough time solving Dowdy. Last season, it was Dowdy’s legs that caused problems for the Cougars defense as he had two rushing touchdowns. In this past Friday’s game, it was Dowdy’s arm that the defense could not solve as Dowdy threw four touchdown passes.
Dowdy had plenty to thank in his two offensive receiving weapons in James Allen and Chaz Boggs, whom each collected two receiving touchdowns. In last years Mavericks victory, the team scored all five touchdowns in the run game.
The loss for the Cougars dropped the team to 0-5 to start the season.
In the loss, Desmond Jordan put together one his best offensive performances of the season as he had a three touchdown game, including a 50 yard run for the score. All three scores for Jordan came on the ground.
The Cougars trailed 27-6 at halftime.
With half of the season left to go, the Cougars have plenty of time to turn their season around.
The Cougars return home for the first time in nearly a month this Friday when the team hosts the undefeated Grayson County Blue Devils (4-0) at Boodie Albert Stadium. This will be the first of three straight home games for the Cougars.
Last year meeting between the two teams was cancelled.
