Craig County will host its first annual Independence Day Parade on Monday morning, July 4, 2022. The parade is sponsored by the Craig County Tourism Commission and Craig Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The parade route will begin on Rt. 311 at the Craig County Fairgrounds (342 Kanawha St) and continue to Main Street, where the parade will turn right and proceed two blocks to Craig County Courthouse. Prizes and gifts will be awarded in the yard of the courthouse to the Most Patriotic parade entry and to the Best Children’s entries.
Spectators will find good viewing spots along Rt. 311 (Salem Avenue), particularly the New Castle Town Park. Main Street is also a good location, with its wide sidewalks and open spaces. Parking will be available on side streets. Parade announcers will be located on Main Street, at Farm Bureau, and a third spot to be determined.
Businesses open in New Castle on July 4 will include The Emporium on Main Street and Food Country USA on Market. Restaurants with extended hours are Bibo’s Pizzeria and Mike’s Ice House. Immediately after the parade, the Historical Society will sell a hot dog lunch and the Public Library will have a Bake Sale on the porch of the Old Brick Hotel across from the courthouse.
The parade will leave from the Fairgrounds at 10:00 a.m. The parade route (Rt. 311) through the center of New Castle will be closed to thru traffic. Drivers will want to allow extra time and parade spectators will want to arrive before 10 a.m. to find their ideal viewing spot.
For more information and to enter the parade, contact Tina Crawford at 540-765-9913 or CraigValleyChapterNSDAR@gmail.com.
An additional Fourth of July event in the county is the return of the Paint Bank Volunteer Fire & Rescue traditional fundraiser. Held in their firehouse at 15998 Paint Bank Road (Rt. 311), the meal of chicken or ham will begin at 12 noon and an auction will start at 2:00. Everyone is welcome.
Travel time between New Castle and Paint Bank is about thirty minutes, allowing plenty of time to view the parade and shop in New Castle, then enjoy the scenic ride over Potts Mountain to lovely downtown Paint Bank. Get your Red, White & Blue on!
