The Alleghany Mountaineers (9-3) varsity baseball team for the month of April have been perfect.
Literally, perfect.
Following their 4-1 victory on Friday evening against the Carroll County Cavaliers, the Mounties are two wins away from a perfect month of April.
Despite matching a season-high in walks with five, Halen Lowman (W, 1-for-2), pitched a solid outing on the mound for the winning Mounties. Lowman, pitched 5.1 scoreless innings where he gave up four hits and struck out five batters. The win improved Lowman’s record to 2-2 on the season.
Hunter DePriest (S, 2-for-3), surrendered one run in 1.2 innings pitched, but did his job in relief of Lowman, as DePriest picked up the save for the Mounties. DePriest, gave up one run on one hit, while walking and striking out one. DePriest, also led the Mounties offense in hits with two. He was the only Mountie with a multi-hit ballgame as the Mounties collected nine total hits in the teams victory.
The Mounties offense collected four total runs in the game all coming on RBI’s (runs batted in). Lowman, Andrew Middleton (1-for-4), Garrett Via (1-for-3), and Chris Harden (1-for-3), each had an RBI.
After two and half scoreless innings, the Mounties were able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning following a two-out RBI single by Via scoring Eli Weese (1-for-3) who had hit a one-out double to set the Mounties up with a runner in scoring position.
In the fourth inning, the Mounties added three runs all coming on five singles within six at bats. Lowman, Harden, and Middleton, each had RBI’s in the inning.
The Cavaliers were able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out RBI double by William Berrier (2-for-4). Berrier, led the Cavaliers with two hits in the teams lineup. The Cavaliers a group only collected five total hits.
In the Mounties six wins in the month of April, they have outscored their opponents 81-18. That is a run differential of 63. The closet game they have had so far this month was the game on Friday against the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers will have May 10th marked on their calendars. That’s the next time they play the Mounties, only this time they’ll be the hosts.
The last time the Mounties lost seems like ages ago when they lost at the Riverheads Gladiators, 6-1. Of the Mounties only three losses, two of the three have come against the Gladiators.
To finish of the month with a perfect record, the Mounties will host James River this evening at 5:00 p.m. and then travel on Friday to take on the Radford Bobcats. The Mounties defeated the Bobcats on April 12, 17-5.
