On Tuesday evening, DSLCC Roadrunners Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Brandon Garrett, resigned from his position after three years with the program.
“Right now, I need to take some time for me and now is the right time for me to move in a different direction”, said Coach Garrett on resigning as head coach of the Roadrunners.
“I enjoyed my time (at Dabney), it had been a dream of mine to be a head coach at the college level. I really enjoyed recruiting and getting out and meeting potential student athletes and their families. The biggest thing was laying a foundation for them (Dabney) to build on”, said Coach Garrett on his time being the head basketball coach at Dabney.
Coach Garrett’s last game coaching for the Roadrunners came in a 104-101 loss to Sandhills Community College in the semifinals of the Region 10 Tournament. Sandhills, was ranked the 10th team in the country.
“Our kids gave it all they had that night. We made some mistakes down the stretch, that I wish we could get back, but in basketball, when you’re playing a team that is well coach, which is what they (Sandhills) are, you just want a shot at the end and we had a chance to tie the game, but we missed the shot. I told our guys that I was so proud of them for the way they conducting themselves and how hard they played. I couldn’t of been happier considering we lost, everybody would of liked to win, but considering we lost, the product we put out there that night was great”, said Coach Garrett on his teams loss to Sandhills in the Region 10 tournament.
Coach Garrett added, “We came in (myself and the coaching staff), we did our job, we laid down our foundation, we’re leaving having won 27 games and losing 25. It’s not all always about wins and losses, but it’s something to be proud of. We started the program and I think we did a pretty solid job overall (building it).
Coach Garrett, has coached at all levels, from Middle School, to High School, an assistant at the college level, to be being a head coach. Coach Garrett did say that he’s not giving up on coaching and that if the right opportunity comes along he would consider getting back on the sidelines.
Garrett’s Roadrunners went 15-10 in his first season in 2019-2020. The team did not have a season in 2020-21, and this past season, the team finished with a record of 12-15 following a 9-3 start to the season.
We wish Coach Garrett the best of luck in the future.
