The Alleghany Mountaineers and Bath County Chargers varsity girls basketball teams kicked off their 2021-22 season on Tuesday evening.
In a home opener for the Mountaineers, the team cruised to an 81-15 victory over the Chargers.
The tempo of the game was set from the opening minutes.
The Mountaineers forced several turnovers before the Chargers could get their first shot off.
The Mountaineers won the turnover battle as the Chargers committed 36 in the game, while the Mountaineers only had six total.
In the first quarter, the fast paced tempo set by forcing turnovers and great execution with ballhandling, helped set up the Mountaineers with a 29-2 lead.
In the first quarter, the Mountaineers forced 10 Charger turnovers, including two of her five steals of the game by freshman, Kelsey Nicely.
After the first quarter, sophomore, Abbie Fridley had 10 points. Fridley finished the game with 14 points.
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers scoring run continued to 27 points unanswered as the team took a 33-2 lead.
With just over four minutes left in the first half, Chargers freshman, Laken Tingler, scored her first of a team high six points to snap the scoring drought. Tingler also had a team high seven rebounds.
After the first half was over, the Mountaineers had a 43 point lead at 49-6.
In the second half, Nicely, picked up 14 of her game high 23 points. Nicely, also finished the game with eight rebounds.
Averi Phillips led the way for the Mountaineers with nine rebound effort to go along with four steals and five points.
The Mountaineers had 15 steals in the third quarter alone and 29 for the game.
Sophomore Macyn Cash had five of her game high seven steals in the third quarter as the Mountaineers grabbed a 61 point lead. Cash finished with 16 points.
The Mountaineers made two of their eight three point attempts, both coming from, junior, Kendell Keene, who finished second in scoring for the game with 18 points.
The Mountaineers were back on the court last night at Liberty. The Chargers will host Pocahontas County in their home opener tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
