At the Salem Civic Center, Saturday afternoon, the Glenvar Highlanders won the Fall 2021 Class 2 Volleyball State Championship.
The Highlanders defeated the Central Woodstock Falcons in straight sets to win the title.
It’s the Highlanders second state volleyball championship and first since 2006.
It was the opening set that set the tone for the championship.
With the score even at 2-2, the Highlanders went on a 12-3 run to take a 14-5 lead.
The Falcons then used an 8-1 run to cut the lead to two points at 15-13 before Highlanders senior, Bailey Conner took over the set by converting seven kills in her teams last 10 points of the first set.
The Highlanders won the first set by nine points.
Conner, led the team with 20 kills.
In the second set, the Falcons led for the majority of it and had a lead 13-10 lead midway through the set.
The Highlanders then used a 15-10 run highlighted by junior Sydney Loder, who ended the set with back to back aces to win the set.
Loder finished the game with a total of five aces.
Trailing by two sets, the Falcons needed to start to take it one game at a time, but by this point, the team was already down too much to rally from.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 13-4 advantage early on in the third set.
The two teams then traded off points before the Falcons cut into the deficit at 18-11.
That would be the closest the Falcons had to reaching their opponent in the third set as the Highlanders ended the game with a 7-3 run to end the game.
Of course with triumph comes defeat with the Falcons coming up short of a state title.
However, the team has plenty to be proud of as the teams 24 victories was a school record. The program also won its first regional title in 24 years this past Fall season.
Audrey Conner led the way for the Highlanders with 22 assists, while teammate Cara Butler had 18.
For the Falcons, senior, Erika Hutton, had a team high 14 assists and six digs.
Fellow senior, Luyando Disdier led the Falcons with 15 digs.
