Last week the area schools went 1-2.
The Covington Cougars had easily had the game of the week in not only the area, but the entire state of Virginia when they won a thrilling 33-26 road Pioneer District game against Narrows.
This will be just the third time this season that all three area schools will be on the football field tomorrow night.
All three games tomorrow will be key district games.
Carroll County at Alleghany
After playing three games in an eight day span, the Mountaineers will have had a full week of recouping before their game tomorrow night.
It wasn’t an easy eight days for the Mountaineers as the team lost the three games by an average of just over 38 points a game and were held to just 14 total points in those three games.
The teams loss last Friday against Glenvar was their sixth loss in a row and dropped the team to a record of 1-6 and 0-3 in the Three Rivers District.
After the first quarter, Glenvar had a 42-0.
Garrett Via has been one of the sparks on the Mountaineers offense.
In the last two games, Via has had six catches for 52 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Last Friday, Via finished the game with four catches, 42 yards and a touchdown.
For the Carroll County Cavaliers, they enter tomorrow nights game with the same record as the Mountaineers at 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the district.
The Cavaliers however, are coming off of their first win of the season after losing their first five games of the season.
The win for the Cavaliers came in a non district home game against Patrick County, 21-12.
Despite the 1-6 record for the Cavaliers, the team is only losing by a nine point differential and have played their opponents tough.
On the road alone, the Cavaliers are keeping the games tight. Against Grayson County on the road the team lost by only five points, one point loss to Galax, seven point double overtime loss to Wythe. The teams other two road losses came against Glenvar (28-0) and Radford (36-7).
It will be senior night tomorrow for the Mountaineers and the seniors will make sure to send the Cavaliers back home with a loss.
Craig County at Bath County
Last Friday, the Chargers fell to the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs 28-6.
The loss for the Chargers was the teams fifth in a row and kept them winless on the season at 0-5.
The loss also dropped the Chargers to an 0-2 record in the district.
A few bright notes though for the Chargers football team, in the last two games, the team has scored 18 points. Prior to their loss two weeks ago against East Hardy in which the team scored 12 points, the team had been scoreless for their first 14 quarters, a span of three+ games.
That’s one of the bright sides for this Chargers football team is that they are finally getting on the scoreboard. The one downside to that is, the points are coming when the game is out of reach.
The other bright side for the Chargers, last week, the 28 points the team surrendered was the fewest since the teams season opener with the Covington (22-0).
The Craig County Rockets, will enter tomorrow’s game with a 2-4 overall record and also 0-2 in district play.
The Rockets are currently riding a two game losing streak in which they have been held scoreless in each and have given up 66 points. The losses coming against East Mont and Parry McCluer.
Covington at Parry McCluer
For the second week in a row, this is your area game of the week.
It’ll be back to back tough road tests for the Cougars when they travel to Buena Vista to take on the Parry McCluer Fighting Blues.
The Cougars enter tomorrow nights district showdown with a 3-2 record and a 2-0 district record.
After the teams second half thrilling comeback victory over Narrows, the team is ready for the battle that’ll come their way tomorrow as the Fighting Blue enter with a 4-3 record and 2-0 as well in the district.
It wasn’t a good start to the Fighting Blues season as the team last its first three games and were held to just 14 total points during that time.
The three losses for the Fighting Blues came against Rockbridge County, Riverheads, and James River (Buchanan).
The loss to James River was by 15 points, 23-8. The Cougars lost to James River 34-32 and nearly pulled out the victory on the teams final drive before a Javier Yancy interception sealed the victory for the Fighting Blues.
Each school is riding momentum into tomorrow’s game.
The Cougars the defense shut Narrows down in the second half and held them to only six points. All while the defense forced a season high, six turnovers. Five of them coming in the second half and four on the first four drives of the second half.
Meanwhile the Fighting Blues have momentum after their 40 point district victory on the road at Craig County last week.
These area games outcomes tomorrow night will have implications on the VHSL rankings next week.
