How do you follow up a Friday night after the one we saw last week with the Covington Cougars winning a thrilling overtime victory over the Alleghany Mountaineers for the Brackman Cup.
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back with their second road game in row as they travel to Roanoke to take on the Cave Spring Knights.
Meanwhile, Covington will be at home for a second straight week as they host James River Knights.
Alleghany at Cave Spring;
The Mountaineers will look to put last Friday nights loss to the Cougars in the back of their minds when they take on a winless Cave Spring Knights team.
The Knights are coached by first year head coach, Nick Leftwhich.
Leftwhich took over for Tim Fulton who stepped down after 16 seasons as coach.
In Leftwhich’s first season, the team has had some close games this season including a two point home loss to Hidden Valley and an eight point home loss to Northside.
Despite their 0-3 record, the only game that got away from the Knights was a 14 point loss (28-14) last week at Glenvar.
The Knights have scored in double digits in all three of their games this season.
After an 0-2 start at home, the Knights will look to slow down the Mountaineers offense whom are averaging 31 points a game through their first two games.
The offense will be led by their rushing attack.
The team is averaging 215 rushing yards a game, which is good enough for over seven yards a carry.
However, with a Knights team only surrendering just over 20 points a game through three games, it makes for a compelling Friday night game in Roanoke.
James River at Covington;
For the Cougars, they will look to continue to ride the high of last weeks victory over the Mountaineers with their home game against James River.
The team enters the game tomorrow with a 2-1 record.
One thing Head Coach, Chris Jones of Covington said last week in the win over the Mountaineers was trying to eliminate the penalties.
The Cougars are averaging over five personalities a game.
Clock management could be the difference in the game for the Cougars.
In the win over the Mountaineers, the Cougars held onto the ball for nearly three fourths of the game. It helped keep the Mountaineers offense on the sideline and allowed for quarterback, Javier Yancey to slow the temp down and lead the way for the Cougars.
The Knights enter the game with an even record at 1-1.
After the team was blown out in its season opener at home to Buffal Gap by 23 points, the team reversed course and delivered a 15 point win over Parry McCluer last week.
One thing the Cougars will have to be careful of is the big plays. The Cougars have seen a lot of big plays this season so far.
Two of the Knights touchdowns against Parry McCluer came of 39 and 74 yards.
Last week the Cougars gave up a 71 yard and 55 yard touchdown.
The week prior, Staunton had touchdown plays of 26 and 23 yards against the Cougars.
