Mrs. R.L. Jenkins, of the most worthy of all the good women in Alleghany County who lost her husband a few years ago, has now lost her home.
Fire completely destroyed her dwelling at Falling Spring?��(old Barber) yesterday. She is absolutely destitute. There was not one cent of insurance.
Who will aid this good woman?

Today’s Headline: Bean And Lowen Stage Life Saving Classes At Central High School.
J. Hunter Bean and James Lowen of the Westvaco First Aid Squad were the instructors for a program on “Means of Saving a Life.”
The program was sponsored by the Central Future Homemakers for the home nursing classes.
The student body of Central High School and fifth and sixth graders were guests.
Mrs. Connie Lowman, who has been the special instructor for the advanced home nursing classes, introduced the speakers.

Today’s Headline: City To Apply For Literary Loan For Improvements.
The Covington City School Board voted Wednesday to begin the application process for a state literary loan to assist in an estimated $4 million capital improvement project at Covington High School and Jeter-Watson?��Middle School.
Superintendent Dr. Jerry Webb said yesterday that the funding will allow for a total renovation at CHS at an estimated cost of $3.6 million, $1.5 million of which will be requested from the literary fund.
A total of $641,000 in renovations have been proposed for JWMS, $200,000 of which will be a literary loan.

Today’s Headline: MeadWestvaco Union Workers Authorize Strike.
Union members at the MeadWestvaco Corp. paper mill in Covington voted overwhelmingly Sunday to authorize a strike against the company.
Officials with Local 8-675 said 96 percent of 887 union members voting Sunday authorized a strike if negotiations with the company do not make progress.
