May 20, 1936
Today’s Headline: Reject Bids As High On New Schools.
The Alleghany County School Board yesterday afternoon rejected all of the bids submitted by contractors for the building of the proposed East Covington School and the Selma School because they were considered out of proportion to the amount that the board originally intended to spend.
The building of a new school at Selma has given much concern to the residents of Alleghany County generally since the near-tragic burning of the old school last fall.
The East Covington School is to be built on the corner at the intersection of Alleghany Avenue and Walnut Street and will have eight rooms.

May 20, 1961
Today’s Headline: Jordan Going To Leggett’s Convention.
J. Lacy Jordan, manager of Leggett’s in Covington left today to attend the Belk Store Manager’s Convention at Pinehurst, N.C.
Residents of the area proposed for annexation by the city of Clifton Forge will have an opportunity to express their views on the move in an adjourned meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors at 7:30 Monday.

May 20, 1986
Today’s Headline: C&O Freight Office May Close In Covington.
The Chesapeake and Ohio freight office in Covington may be closed and the building sold if the State Corporation Commission grants a request filed by the railroad.
Under the application, the railroad property to transfer the functions of the Covington freight office to Clifton Forge, moving the two employees currently in the office to Clifton Forge.

Today’s Headline: Project Will Honor Marine Killed In Iraq.
A project is underway to pay lasting tribute to fallen Alleghany County serviceman John Ryan Howard.
Anna Rock Rayhill, life-long resident of Potts Creek in Alleghany County and Paint Bank in Craig County, was honored at a luncheon May 4 with the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the National League of American PEN Women in Salem.
