Robert Joseph Carpenter and Meagan Allanna Jefferson have been named Good Citizens for the 2010-11 school year by Rainbow Ridge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Students are judged on five criteria and an essay. The criteria include honor, service, courage, leadership and their patriotism.
This year’s essay theme was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility to Preserve It – What Is the Greatest Challenge We Face in America Today?”
Robert is a student at Alleghany High School and the son of Margaret Carpenter and the late Robert Carpenter of Covington.
He has been a very active student at Alleghany High School where he has excelled in academics and sports.
He was the varsity football and basketball captain and earned First Team All-Blue Ridge District honors as a middle linebacker this past year.
He is a member of the Key Club, National Honor Society and a Pep Club member. He attended Virginia Boys State and is active in the local YMCA. He is also a member of the Calvary Christian Church Property Committee.
Robert plans to further his education at Old Dominion University where he hopes to take ROTC courses to become an officer in the U.S. Army and carry out such a commission.
Meagan is a student at Covington High School. She is the daughter of Keith Moore and Dionne Jefferson-Moore of Covington and Jeffrey Davis of Clifton Forge.
Meagan has been an active student while attending CHS. She is attending Jackson River Governor’s School, where she has earned college credit in science, math and technology.
She is a member of the Beta Club, FBLA and was a varsity cheerleader. She was a Girls State delegate and has earned her CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross. She also enjoys writing poetry and has had a poem published in Poetry.Com
She plans to further her education at Virginia Commonwealth University with a focus on a combination of chemistry and pre-pharmacy.
Both students wrote an essay on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.”
