CLIFTON FORGE – The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded the MeadWestvaco Scholarship to Jordan Carroll of Clifton Forge.

The award will assist with tuition and book expenses at DSLCC for one year and is part of more than $95,000 the non-profit foundation will award in merit and need-based scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year.

A June graduate of Alleghany High School, Carroll is the son of Kacy and Liza Carroll. He will be pursuing studies in Information Systems Technology at DSLCC and explains that he hopes to work in the computer field, perhaps in a research capacity.

Carroll’s nearly 4.0 grade point average is testimony to his determination and focus in his scholastic career at Alleghany High School.

He was selected for membership in the AHS Beta Club as a junior and, through his participation in DSLCC’s Dual Enrollment program and begins his post-secondary career with three college credits.

Former teachers describe Carroll as a conscientious and determined student who was persistent in his work ethic.

“Jordan was not only serious about his goals,” commented one teacher, “but he also had a pleasant personality in class, was polite, and related well with his peers.”

His involvement in extracurricular activities at AHS included memberships in the Future Business Leaders of America Club for two years and the Foreign Language Club and Skills USA Club for one year. Carroll also was a member of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA Swim Team for five years.

Through his membership in the AHS Beta Club, Carroll has given back to his community through his volunteer efforts with the Alleghany Humane Society, the local food pantry, the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother program, and local nursing homes.

Carroll is a member of Central Advent Christian Church where he helps with the cleaning of the church and upkeep for the church cemetery.

Formerly the Westvaco Pulp and Paper Scholarship, the MWV Scholarship was re-named to reflect the broadening disciplines that are represented in employment at the company.

Its purpose is to attract academically qualified students to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree in a technology field such as engineering, computer science, information technology or the biological/chemical sciences.

The DSLCC Educational Foundation’s goal is to “Build Hope… Build Futures… Build Lives,” and the foundation works to fulfill this goal by awarding thousands of dollars in merit and need-based scholarships each year to residents of the college’s service area.

The foundation also assists the college with the purchase of technological and classroom equipment and through the awarding of faculty grants for educational study.

For more information, contact foundation Director Lynda Thompson, by phone at 863-2837, by email at lthompson@dslcc.edu, or access the foundation’s website at www.dslcc.edu.
