COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS) is proud to announce the launch of its Substance Use Continuum Renovation Project, a major investment in the region’s behavioral health infrastructure courtesy of the Opioid Abatement Authority. Construction began on Monday, April 14th, at the Clinic and Old Burke Building and is expected to continue for 10 to 12 months.

This renovation reflects AHCS’s long-term commitment to supporting mental health and substance use recovery in the community. In response to the growing demand for behavioral health services, the project will significantly expand clinic space and create a welcoming environment for individuals seeking support and connection. The renovation will include a peer drop-in center equipped with laundry facilities, showers, meeting rooms, and office space. The downstairs area will feature group and individual therapy rooms, a lab, primary care screening and treatment spaces, psychiatry offices, and a community meeting/training room accessible after hours. The upstairs will house case management services, clinicians, Recovery Court, Jail Services, and flexible office space. A new hallway behind the peer center will connect these three areas, improving transitions from same-day access to substance use services.

“Breaking ground around Alcohol Awareness and Mental Health Awareness Month reinforces our mission to put mental wellness at the forefront,” said Ingrid Barber, Executive Director. “This renovation is more than just a physical update—it’s a symbol of our commitment to offering hope, support, and healing for those impacted by mental health and substance use challenges.”

Key improvements include increased space for clinical offices and group therapy, along with a new peer center where individuals can engage in recovery-focused programming in a supportive, stigma-free setting.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, AHCS invites the public to join in the “Be Seen in Green Block Party” a community celebration on May 15th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 311 South Monroe Ave. in Covington. The event will feature giveaways, yoga, crafts, fun activities, food, and local
vendors, along with valuable information on mental health resources and services.

AHCS looks forward to keeping the community updated as the renovation progresses and continues to promote mental health awareness and support for all.
