Billy Hicks has more than 30 years of experience as a high school and AAU basketball coach and skills trainer.
Hicks has hooked up with the Alleghany Highlands YMCA to offer two clinics for youth in grades eight through 12.
A boys clinic will be held on March 28 from 9 a.m. to noon, with a girls clinic scheduled for April 18.
The camps will have a $25 fee for both YMCA members and non-members.
There will be a limit of 40 players per session.
“We are excited to bring Coach Hicks to the area and give this amazing opportunity to the kids in this area,” said Rachel Hepler, YMCA program director.
Hicks won three Virginia High School League state championships at Cave Spring — 2002, 2009 and 2010.
He is a seven-time district coach of the year, a five-time region coach of the year and a three-time state coach of the year.
Hicks has worked with several players that have gone on to play college and professional basketball.
The list includes J.J. Redick, Josh Henderson, Tyler Lumsden and Danny Aiken.
Hicks comes to the area through a relationship with Bruce Lowman.
“My son Halen played for Coach Hicks on his Twin Hoops Elite AAU team a couple years ago and he became a friend and mentor to Halen from that point forward,” Bruce said.
Registration is open for the boys clinic and will stay open until all spots are filled.
Registration for the girls clinic will start in the near future.
For any questions or to register over the phone contact the YMCA front desk at 540-962-9622. You can also contact Hepler through e-mail at rheplerahymca@gmail.com.
