LOW MOOR - Suzanne Adcock will join three incumbents who were re-elected Tuesday to the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors.
Adcock, a write-in candidate, was elected to the Clifton Forge East District seat Tuesday with 248 votes.
She will join three incumbents – Steve Bennett, Carolyn Barnette and Paige Morgan – who won re-election Tuesday.
Morgan waged a write-in campaign to win re-election to her Covington District seat. She defeated another write-in candidate, the Rev. Paul Harris, 112-89, according to unofficial returns released Wednesday by the Alleghany County Electoral Board.
Bennett, the supervisor chairman, defeated Bob Bennett of Rich Patch 583-263 to gain another four-year term as Jackson River District representative. Barnette, the vice chairwoman, won a tight race over Clifton Forge Mayor Don Carter to keep her Clifton Forge West District seat. Barnette defeated Carter 241-232.
Barnette said she was pleased by the outcome of Tuesday’s supervisor elections.
“I am just so impressed with the continuation of our board together. I thank the Lord for it,” she said. “It is really an answer to prayer.”
Adcock will replace Mac Campbell as Clifton Forge East representative in January. Campbell did not seek re-election.
“I am very happy that all of you will be representing me as a taxpayer, but I’m not gone yet,” Campbell told board members and Adcock Wednesday night.
Adcock, who was present for Wednesday’s meeting, will be brought up to speed on issues before she assumes her seat in January. She will resign from her seat on the Alleghany County School Board before taking office.
“Welcome to the fire,” Falling Spring Supervisor Rickey May said to Adcock. “It gets warm up here sometimes but we seem to survive.”
Bennett re-emphasized his belief that the Tuesday elections indicate that voters are satisfied with the overall direction of the county.
“Alleghany County has got a good team right now. Let’s keep moving forward,” he said.
