LOW MOOR - The Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic has received a $25,000 grant from the the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The money will help the Free Clinic provide screenings and diagnostic mammograms to women facing financial constraints.
Many women in the Highlands have no health insurance and the cost of mammograms prevents them from seeking the service.
In early June, a female came to the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic for a screening mammogram. The woman could not afford to pay for a mammongram on her own and had not seen a doctor for years. Eight lumps were found and she was immediately scheduled for a biopsy. The Free Clinic reports that the woman is doing well now and is thankful for the services she received.
The Free Clinic operates sites in Alleghany and Bath counties. Female residsents of both counties should call to see if they qualify for a free mammongram. The number in Alleghany County is 863-3019 and Bath County, 839-7000.
