LOW MOOR — Alleghany High School will hold its 2024 Commencement Exercises on Saturday, June 1, at Casey Field in Covington. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will be held at Casey Field due to ongoing work projects at Alleghany High School. New roofing is being installed at AHS and Jackson River Technical Center, and there will be ongoing work in June to finish construction of a new track at Mountaineer Field.
Casey Field was chosen as the graduation site after discussions were held between school administration and student leadership. Holding graduation at Casey Field will better serve the community because graduates will be allocated more tickets to accommodate family and friends.
“We are especially excited to celebrate the Class of 2024’s commencement. Our decision to host this landmark event at Casey Field was made with our families in mind, aiming to maximize the opportunity for loved ones to witness this moment in their student’s life,” said AHS Principal Derek Cantrell.
The Class of 2024 will be the first class to graduate from the combined Alleghany High School. AHS became the joint high school for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools when schools opened last fall. AHS houses students in grades 9-12 from throughout the Alleghany Highlands.
“This ceremony is not just a first for our graduates, but also a historic moment as the inaugural commencement for the newly consolidated Alleghany High School. We look forward to sharing this special day with our students and their families,” Cantrell said.
AHPS was formed in July 2022 when Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center merged. The school division serves approximately 2,700 students, and it is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington.
