Location: The 100-acre Coles Point and 511-acre Morris Hill units are located near Covington in Alleghany County, VA.
Date and Time: The Forest Service plans to begin ignitions on February 20, 2024, if weather conditions are appropriate. Residents and forest visitors may see and smell smoke from this prescribed burn for a few days.
Closures: Morris Hill and Coles Point Recreation Area will be temporarily closed.
Smoke: Smoke will be visible around Lake Moomaw and in the surrounding communities.
Objectives: This burn will help reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires by reducing the buildup of dried leaves and wood in nearby forest land.
