On the morning of 9-05-2023 A male individual made contact with an Alleghany County resident after leaving several voicemails and informed them that they had missed a court date and had an outstanding Failure to Appear warrant along with a fine that needed to be paid.
The male caller left voicemails and identified himself as an actual known Alleghany County Sheriff’s Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office and advised the intended victim that they could pay the fine with a moneypak card and gave instructions on how to proceed in making the payment and how to obtain the moneypak card while staying on the phone with intended victim. The victim advised investigators that the scam sounded legitimate with the known Deputy’s name and rank being used as well as being given a case number.
The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens that they do not call and request money over the phone or collect fines. Fines are paid and collected by the Clerks Office’s. The Sheriff’s Office would like citizens to be aware of the incident and be aware and alert if they receive calls identifying themselves as any law enforcement officer or any agency.
Remember: “When in doubt, call us and have it checked out”
