COVINGTON – The Covington Lumberjacks have put together their first win streak of the season following a 6-4 victory over the New Market Rebels on Saturday, June 10th.

With the score tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Lumberjacks pushed across the go-ahead runs in the inning. Following back-to-back singles from Michael Pavechak and Logan Braunschweig, Nicklas Williams would drive Pavelchak on a fielder’s choice for the teams fifth run.

One batter later Jackson Toverman ripped an RBI double that plated Braunschweig as an insurance run for the Lumberjacks as the team took a 6-4 lead.

While the Jacks’ were victorious, closing the game out was nothing short of easy for Austin Newton who picked up his third save of the season. Newton gave up singles to three of the first four batters in the top of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and only one out Nolan Kutney missed driving the ball deep enough to bring in a run as he popped out to Williams in right field. Down to their final out and the bases still loaded, pinch-hitter Luke Smith would ground out to Matthew Martinolich at short to end the game.

The Jacks’ jumped out to 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning behind David Bell’s two-run home run which was his second of the season. Jackson Toberman and Martinolich also had RBIs in the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning New Market would come back with a four-run inning of their own to tie the game. With two runs having crossed home plate already in the inning, Kyle Musser delivered the game-tying two-run double.

Trent Turner led the Jacks’ with a three-hit day at the plate, while Bell and Toberman each had a pair of RBIs to lead the team. Robert Loya picked up his first win of the season in just his second appearance in eight games thus far on the season. Loya tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen where he struck out five and did not give up a hit. The Jacks’ used five pitchers that combined to strike out 13.
