PURCELLVILLE – On Sunday, June 11th, the Covington Lumberjacks short-lived two-game win streak came to an abrupt end following an 8-5 loss to the Purcellville Cannons at Fireman’s Field.
It was a huge first inning for Purcellville as the team scored six runs. Cullen Horowicz who was the Cannons MVP of the game had the biggest hit of the teams six-run first inning as he ripped a bases-clearing three-run double.
Later in the game in the eighth inning with the Cannons holding onto a slim one run lead, Horowicz once again delivered as he crushed a two-run home run to put the team ahead three runs at 8-5. Horowicz finished the game with two hits in four at bats, along with five RBI’s.
After giving up six runs in the first inning to Purcellville, Covington would cut the deficit to one run in the eighth inning. The Jacks’ were back in the game following a three-run third which cut the lead in half. Roylan Quevado, who was one of two on the team with a three-hit game, delivered a two-run double in the third inning.
David Bell put together another solid outing at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Meanwhile Luke Smith who had only one hit in the game made the best of it as he crushed his first home run of the season.
It was a rough outing for starter Grant Adams who suffered the loss in his second appearance on the mound this season. Adams did not get out of the first inning as he allowed six runs on five hits in 0.2 innings.
While the Jacks’ out-hit their opponent with 13 in the game, the team left 10 stranded on base.
Herndon, VA native, Jabbari Smith was credited with the win after tossing two shutout innings out of the bullpen despite giving up four hits. Meanwhile Luke Lyman, a Berryville, VA native picked up the save following a perfect ninth inning.
