HARRISONBURG, VA – On Wednesday June 7th, the Covington Lumberjacks (2-4) fresh off their 4-2 win the night before against Waynesboro, fell behind early by four runs and could not complete the comeback bid against the Harrisonburg Turks losing 4-3.

In one of only two trips to Veterans Memorial Park this Valley League season, the Turks jumped out early on the Lumberjacks by putting together a four-run third inning.

Micah Morgan had the biggest hit in the inning as he ripped a two-run double that put the Turks ahead 3-0. Jose Perez and Cameron Harris each had RBIs in the inning.

While the four-run third inning from the Turks was enough to pick up the victory, Covington made things very interesting in the top of the fourth inning as they had cut the lead to one run following a three-run inning.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Gregory Melo singled home Logan Braunschweig, who had hit a leadoff single. On the single from Melo, Nicklas Williams, anf Gabriel Miranda also scored on a throwing error by the right fielder.

The Lumberjacks trailing now by only one run had Melo on third base with no outs. Royal Quevedo walked to put runners on the corners. The game’s biggest out then happened as Quevedo took off to second base to steal the bag, but while he did so, so too did Melo from third base attempt to steal home plate. Second baseman Cameron Harris cut the throw off from catcher Matthew Delgado and fired it back to Delgado who tagged out Melo for the first out of the inning.

Harrisonburg’s Domnic Castellano dialed in and got the next two batters out to end the inning and Covington’s comeback bid.

While the Lumberjacks left 10 on base for the game, following their three-run fourth inning, the team stranded seven batters from the fifth inning on.

Michael Pavelchak and Luke Smith led Covington with three hits each, while Braunschweig had a pair of hits. Kyle Morse suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in three innings on the mound. Morse also walked one and struck out one.
