Olivia Ann “Libby” Huggard Bernhardt

Olivia Ann “Libby” Huggard Bernhardt, a longtime resident of Earlysville, passed away on June 8, 2023. She was born on February 11, 1936, in Selma, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Elbert Huggard and Annie Fairburn Huggard; and all of her siblings, William E. Huggard, Jr., Charles R. Huggard, Connie H. Woodall, Virginia H. Worley, Betty H. Shepard, Kenneth A. Huggard, and Frederick E. Huggard. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, James I Bernhardt, of Earlysville; her daughter, Kathryn B. Wash (Dabney) of Richmond; her son, Glenn R Bernhardt of Staunton; and her grandchildren; Jacob T. Wash and Kaitlyn A. Wash of Richmond; as well as many nieces, nephews, and their families. Libby graduated with her RN from the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital Nursing School in Clifton Forge, Virginia in 1957. She was a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital for 25 years before her retirement in 1997. Many patients she took care of will know Libby by her nickname, “Bernie.” She will be remembered for her devotion to her family and her strong will. She loved being a “Ma” to her grandchildren. Our family is grateful for the care she received during her last days on this earth from the Martha Jefferson Hospital Emergency Room, The Martha Jefferson Hospital Wendel 1 ICU Ward, and the paramedics of the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Company. Her family will receive friends at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 201 1st Street North, Charlottesville, Virginia. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens, 3251 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Virginia
