WINCHESTER, VA – Last Saturday, June 3rd, the Winchester Royals rallied from an early five-run deficit to hold onto an 8-6 victory over the Covington Lumberjacks at Jim Barnett Park in Winchester.

Trailing by three runs entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Royals exploded for a six-run inning to take an 8-5 lead. Five different batters in the lineup had RBI’s in the inning. The Royals went ahead 6-5 after Tristan McAlister drew a bases-loaded walk on five pitches. Jancarlos Colon and Joshua Hogue followed with RBI singles that put the team ahead by three runs.

The ninth inning was a missed opportunity for the Lumberjacks. Down by two runs Michael Pavelchak doubled and Logan Braunschweig walked to start the inning. Reid Bowyer, who was looking for the save for Winchester, settled back and retired the next three batters to end the game.

Despite scoring six runs, the Lumberjacks were held to only four hits. Matthew Martinolich led the team with two RBI’s. Martinolich was front and center in the third inning where the team took a 5-0 lead behind a five-run inning as he ripped a two-run double. The loss was charged to Chris Groenemans after he gave up two runs in 0.1 innings.

Chandler Ballenger led all batters in the game with three hits in four plate appearances for the Royals. Ballenger fell a home run shy of the cycle. Joshua Hogue led the team with a pair of RBI’s. In relief, Jake Andrews picked up the win after giving up one run on two hits in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
