LOW MOOR, VA – After dropping their last two games of the regular season, the Alleghany Mountaineers bounced back in a big way on Friday evening as they trounced the Glenvar Highlanders 10-0 in five innings of the Class 2, Region C baseball quarterfinals.

The 10 runs from the Mountaineers matched what they scored combined during their two-game losing streak. Much to the credit to the team’s offense as they exploded for 14 hits in which eight of their starters in the lineup had base hits.

Alleghany senior Eli Weese led all batters with a three-hit day at the plate. Weese was one of five Mounties who had a multi-hit performance. Weese also had two RBI’s. Conner McPeek, Wyatt Griffith, Kole Caldwell, and Chris Harden each had a pair of hits. McPeek led all batters with three RBI’s.

While the offense was great all-around, so too was Alleghany’s pitching as the duo of Hunter DePriest and Halen Lowman did a great job in shutting down Glenvar’s offense. DePriest tossed four shutout innings where he gave up four hits, one walk, and struck out six. Meanwhile Lowman threw one perfect inning.

It was a six-run first inning that brought Alleghany back to their form they had during their first 16 games when they went unbeaten during that time. The inning saw Weese deliver multiple base hits, while McPeek had two RBI’s as the team batted around in the lineup. Along with McPeek, Griffith, Anthony Webb, DePriest, and Caldwell each had RBI’s during the six-run first.

During the third inning, the Mountaineers built on their lead as Weese delivered an RBI double to put the team up eight runs. One inning later in the fourth, Harden and McPeek each added RBI singles to take a commanding 10-run lead.

The Highlanders who were held to just four hits total in the quarterfinal loss grabbed half of them from Jimmy Blount who was 2-for-2 at the plate. Ashton Meadows was charged with the loss after lasting only 0.2 innings where he gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out one.

Alleghany’s win was their third over Glenvar this season.

On Tuesday the regional semifinals take place at Radford University. Alleghany will play in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. where they will face Chatham (17-2) of the Dogwood District. The first semifinal game will see Patrick County face Nelson County.
