We visited with Alleghany senior softball player Kendell Keene about two months ago and spoke with her about finishing up her career on the basketball hardwood for the Lady Mountaineers.
Those two months have flown by as Keene is now staring down the stretch run of her softball days as well.
Keene has had her share of ups and downs on the season, but the Mounties no. 1 pitcher, who is counted on in many ways to provide for her team, delivers the positives more often than not.
We sat down with no. 14 one final time to discuss goals, superstitions and more before she embarks on her post high school journey.
Keene’s question and answer segment is as follows:
VR: What is the secret this year behind your success?
Keene: My coaches, teammates, and family keep me going. I try to go out and play each and every game like it’s my last one. I always strive to give 110 percent and have no regrets coming off the field.
VR: What are your team goals the rest of the way?
Keene: As a team we all want to play well in district games, so we get a good seeding and hopefully make a long run especially being the last team of Alleghany.
VR: How about your personal goals the rest of the way?
Keene: My personal goals are to hopefully make All District and All Region again.
VR: What have you learned from your softball coaches, not only on the field, but off it as well?
Keene: I’ve learned to always try and do my best and when I get tired, and the count is close I have to dig down deep to keep going. My coaches have taught me to always stay mentally and physically strong. They always push for me to be a leader both on and off the field. This means maintaining good grades and being a positive role model for others to look up to. I always want to do my best and be a winner. My coaches have also taught me to keep my head up and keep on pushing.
VR: Do you have any pregame superstitions, or do you hit the field and just play?
Keene: We always pray before playing a game and I think that brings us more courage and confidence.
VR: What will you miss the most about being a part of the Alleghany softball program?
Keene: I will miss being a part of the game. I love being a part of this team. I will miss how it feels to strike someone out or hit a line drive. I will also miss friendships. I love the game of softball more than anything.
Keene has five more regular season games scheduled, weather permitting. Fans are encouraged to get out and see Keene and her fellow Lady Mountaineer teammates, as they attempt to make a push for a state tournament berth as the last original Alleghany squad.
