Six years ago, Covington Lady Cougars second baseman Lexi Dressler started playing softball and volleyball. She began both sports in little league or ‘rec’ league and continued on with travel ball.
And from there, the rest is history.
Dressler, a junior for the Lady Cougars has enjoyed a solid season in 2023. She is hitting over .300 and is second on her team with nine RBIs. She has also scored nine runs and has two doubles.
With Dressler being a regular contributor, it has taken on a new meaning just to be on the program’s roster.
“Being a part of the Covington softball program means a lot to me. It’s like having a second family,” she said.
Dressler said the Cougars always seemed to get overlooked, but when they began having some success a couple years ago, the perception of the team has been more positive.
“In the past, I think the program has been looked over, but after winning the first district title in school history, achieved my freshman year, that all changed,” Dressler explained.
“So far a couple of my favorite memories are winning the district two years in a row and battling in region play, almost making it to states last year,” she added.
The support Dressler receives from all sides of the aisle means a lot to her whether it’s the emotional support from her parents or the talent perspective from the coaches.
“My family is very supportive whether it’s on or off the field. My mom and dad specifically, come to every game of mine,” Dressler said.
“My coaches also play a big role in my sports career and always have new ways to make me better. The impact each coach has had on me is huge and without them I wouldn’t have the many skills they have taught me,” she continued.
Next season will bring on another obstacle for Dressler and some of her underclassmen teammates, but while she admits it will be a little strange at first, it is a hurdle she thinks she can clear.
“Consolidation will change a lot for me. It brings new people and new competition. The people I always thought of as rivals will now be my own teammates,” stated Dressler.
While still a little more than a year away, Dressler has not decided what her post high school plans are yet, but she knows teaching may be in them.
“I haven’t fully decided what I’m going to do after graduation but may possibly go to a community college and university for two years each to be an elementary or a middle school teacher,” she concluded.
