HOT SPRINGS, VA – Five runs in the last two innings capped off a 6-3 comeback Pioneer District victory for the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs over the Bath County Chargers (0-2) on Tuesday evening.

The pitching duo of Cooper Lowry (1-for-3) and Hunter Ryder (L/1-for-4) were cruising along against the Mustangs through the first five innings on Tuesday. Co. Lowry and Ryder had only given up one run on five hits. Ryder though who was pitching in relief of Co. Lowry ran into trouble in the latter innings.

After trailing 3-1, the Mustangs offense needed some kind of jump start and grabbed a run in the sixth inning. That little momentum sparked a four-run seventh inning in which Wyatt Jones (3-for-3) had the biggest hit of them all following a go-ahead two-run single which gave the Mustangs their first lead off the game. Later in the inning with two outs, Lucas Jones (1-for-3) also provided the team with a two-run single that gave the Mustangs a 6-3 lead.

The Chargers in the bottom of the seventh inning put two runners on base with only one out but were unsuccessful in their rally as both runners were left stranded as Co. Lowry and Ca. Lowry struck out back-to-back to end the game.

L. Jones and W. Jones led the Mustangs with two RBI’s each, while Austin Tate (W/3-for-4) added an RBI. W. Jones and Tate led all batters with three hits each. Tate who was also the games winning pitcher tossed two shutout innings where he gave up just two hits, while striking out five. Tate came in relief of Gunner Lawson (1-for-2) who had given up three runs (two earned) on five hits, while walking one and struck out four.

Six Chargers reached the hit column. Ethan Persinger (2-for-3) led the team with a pair of singles, while five other Chargers each had a hit. Ryder took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits in 3.2 innings of relief work. Co. Lowry who started the game allowed just one run on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Chargers are off until Monday where they visit the Narrows Green Waves in a district showdown.
