On the road Wednesday evening, the Mountain Gateway Lady Roadrunners (5-10) suffered their worst loss in nearly two months following an 89-59 defeat to the Patrick & Henry Community College Lady Patriots (6-8).
The two teams went back and forth between the first quarter and the first few minutes of the second quarter with not much separation and several lead changes.
With a slim one point lead at 29-28, the Lady Patriots in a span of four minutes built their lead to 13 points following a 12-0 scoring run.
By halftime, the Lady Patriots led by 15.
In the third quarter, the Lady Roadrunners offense struggled and was held to just nine points.
Nearly three minutes into the third quarter, Covington High School graduate, Cristi Persinger dropped in a layup to bring the Lady Roadrunners within 11 points at 48-37.
That though would be the closest the Lady Roadrunners would get within the Lady Patriots.
It also would be the final points of the quarter from the Lady Roadrunners as the Lady Patriots in the final seven minutes outscored their opponent 16-0 to take a 64-37 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Persinger and Rebecca Ferguson would bring the Lady Roadrunners within 17 points a few times. However, eventually that lead would continue to grow for the Lady Patriots who outscored the Lady Roadrunners 17-6 down the stretch to increase their lead to as high as how much they won by, 30 points.
Ty’Nasia Witcher led all scorers with a game-high 34 points for the Lady Patriots. Destiny Harris scored 19 points, while Persia Singletary added 14, and Nathalia Nascimento chipped in with 10 off of the bench. Harriett Hayford had a game-high 20 rebounds for the winners.
For the Lady Roadrunners, Persinger led the team with a double-double performance as she scored a team-high 17 points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds. Rebecca Ferguson was also in double figures for the Lady Roadrunners with 15 points, while Brooke Davis added 12.
The last time the Lady Roadrunners lost by the margin of 30+ points was back on December 7th against Christendom College where they lost 84-24. That loss on December 7th sparked back to back wins for the Lady Roadrunners who have been a much different team since that loss.
On Saturday, the Lady Roadrunners are at Central Carolina Community College. The team will be back home on Tuesday as they host Appalachian Bible College.
