Four weeks ago, the Narrows Green Wave (9-1) rallied from 16-points down in the second half to pull a come from behind victory on the road against the Covington Cougars (3-8).

In a rematch weeks later in Class 1, Region C first-round, the Green Wave who jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, wouldn’t see their double digit slip away as their would be no comeback in the playoffs for the Cougars as the Green Wave advanced in the regional playoffs following a 34-18 victory.

Following their loss to the Green Wave, the Cougars would rally by winning their next three games to earn a spot in the Class 1 Region C playoffs and would get the #6 seed.

The #3 seed were the Green Wave.

Last year the Cougars defeated the Green Wave on the road.

There’s no question following their loss in which they blew a double digit lead, that the Cougars were ready to avenge that loss.

The Green Wave opened the playoff meeting scoring the games first two touchdowns on touchdown runs by Adain McGlothlin and Sam Albert to take an early 14-0 lead on the Cougars.

Now the Green Wave were left in a spot the Cougars were in just weeks ago.

After giving up the games first two scores, the Cougars with just minutes left in the first half found the end zone as Desmond Jordan connected with Purcel Turner from yards out. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful. However, the Cougars had the momentum they needed.

Less then five minutes into the second half, the Green Wave went back up double digits on Albert’s second rushing touchdown.

Trailing 21-7, Turner found the end zone for the second time. On the ensuing kickoff return, Turner brought it back 75 yards for the score.

The Cougars were back within single digits despite failing to convert their 2pt attempt for a second time.

As the Cougars would score and get some momentum their way, the Green Wave would respond back again as McGlothlin threw his only touchdown pass of the game coming from 25 yards to Reed Perdue which helped increase their lead over the Cougars to 27-12.

Minutes into the fourth quarter, Turner brought the Cougars back within single digits once again as this time he scored a rushing touchdown.

After failing to convert the 2pt attempt for a third time, the Green Wave lead 27-18 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The Cougars would get a big defensive stop by breaking up McGlothlin’s fourth down pass which turned the ball over on downs for the Green Wave. On first down, Jordan looking for the homerun, just over threw Turner which would of been at least a 30-yard reception which would have put the Cougars in Green Wave territory. The drive would end in an interception.

The Green Wave would add a late-game touchdown from Albert who scored from 40 yards out which opened their lead to 16-points.

Despite the win, the Green Wave will be happy not to see Turner anymore this season and depending on their schedule, maybe not next season either. In the last three meetings against the Cougars, the Green Wave gave up 11 touchdowns to Turner, including three in their playoff game.

Jordan was held under 100 passing yards for the fist time in over month as he finished the game throwing for 79 yards while completing 11 of his 20 pass attempts.

For the Green Wave, McGlothlin finished with 144 yards passing on 13-of-21 pass attempts and two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. Meanwhile, the Green Wave grabbed a big game from Albert’s who ran for over 130 yards on the Cougars, including three touchdown runs.

The Green Wave will now be on the road this week against #2 seeded George Wythe who defeated #7 seeded Parry McCluer, 41-22.

The Cougars season comes to an end at 3-8. The team started out 0-7 and won three in a row to earn a postseason playoff berth in the final season ever at Covington High School.
