Sheriff Dyche Removed To C&O Hospital
Sheriff Robert E. Dyce was taken to C&O Hospital in Clifton Forge, this afternoon, where he will undergo an operation for the removal of buckshot from his left shoulder and thigh. United States deputy marshal Beazeley, one of four officers, shot Monday night near Flinn, when the officers closed in on a shanty occupied by S.J. Thrasher in a n effort to capture Angus, Jess and Basel Scott, three brothers, who escaped from the Lewisburg, W. Va., jail, was reported in a very serious condition at C.&O. Hospital, Clifton Forge, today.

President Eisenhower outlines to the nation tonight his program for training more American youths as scientists in the space era struggle against Russia. Some key scientific advisors to the President reportedly have suggested to him that the federal government grant scholarships to promising students as an incentive.

Pittston To Layoff 1,800 Monday From Coal Mines
A slumping coal market will lead Monday to the layoff of 1,800 mine employees of the Pittston Coal Group. Pittston said Friday it had 1,200 West Virginia workers to the 600 Virginia workers already scheduled to be laid off.

U.S. Scours Tape For Info On Bin Laden
Lawmakers and the Bush administration worried that a new audio message believed to be from Osama bin Laden is a signal that more terror strikes are imminent even as counterterrorism analysts scoured the recording for clues about al-Qaida’s operation. The message, aired Tuesday on the Arabic television network al-Jazeera, appears aimed at both Westerners and al-Qaida loyalists, officials said.

Tom O’Meara Receives VHSL Award Of Merit For Regional III
Long-time Alleghany High School athletic booster Tom O’Meara was recently honored by the member schools of Region III. O’Meara received the 2007 Virginia High School Award of Merit for Region III during an October VHSL meeting in Charlottesville.
