On Thursday at the Cougar Den, the Covington Cougars (18-3/9-1) in four sets won a big Pioneer District matchup with rival the Bath County Chargers (12-7/5-4).
The win for the Cougars have at least clinched a share of the district title. With one more victory, the Cougars will have clinched the overall outright regular season district title and could come as early as Tuesday when they are on the road against the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs.
Despite winning the second set against the Cougars and tying the game at 1-1, the Chargers couldn’t continue their momentum that they put together following their big district victory over the Narrows Green Wave on Tuesday.
The Cougars grabbed big performances out of Kaiya Lin and Aubrey Brown. Lin had a game-high 12 kills, 12 digs, and three aces, while Brown finished with 11 digs, 10 kills, and four aces.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Oliver had another solid game for the Chargers following a seven kill and five dig performance. Laken Tingler led the Chargers with 10 kills and seven digs, while also adding a team best eight assists.
The Cougars who have won five win a row, conclude their regular season this week with their away game tomorrow against the Mustangs and on their season finale on Thursday against the visiting Green Wave. The Green Wave defeated the Cougars over two weeks ago.
For the Chargers, their regular season will conclude this week as well with all three games coming at home. On Monday the Chargers host Eastern Montgomery, tomorrow they host Highland, and their regular season concludes with Parry McCluer on Thursday.
The JV Cougars team won in two sets on Thursday as they improved to 19-1 on the season.
