Alleghany High School’s football game at Glenvar has been rescheduled from Friday, Oct. 14, 2022, to Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, due to a shortage of officials affecting Virginia.
As part of the rescheduling, Alleghany’s junior varsity football game against Glenvar, originally slated for Thursday, Oct. 13, has been moved to Wednesday, Oct. 12. That game will be played at Mountaineer Field.
High schools throughout Virginia are working with officiating supervisors by agreeing to play some of their home games on either Thursday nights or Saturday nights instead of Fridays this fall. Bryan Stinespring, the activities director for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, said officiating supervisors do not have the ability to provide enough officials to cover multiple contests occurring on the same night.
“This is a statewide dilemma that impacts every region. Officiating supervisors have made us aware of this situation for the last six months. In the spring, there were schedule changes due to a limited number of officials that affected other areas of Virginia,” Stinespring said.
“In an effort to do our part in helping reduce the strain on officiating crews, Glenvar and Alleghany High School have mutually agreed to move our game from the traditional Friday night game to Thursday. We tried to do this quickly so our parents and fan base can plan accordingly. We appreciate our community’s understanding as we cooperate with other high schools and officiating supervisors,” he said.
Home football games at Alleghany High School and Covington High School are not expected to be rescheduled. Each school has four home games. AHS’ home games are: Covington, Sept. 9; Cave Spring, Sept. 16; Radford, Sept. 30; and Floyd County, Oct. 28. CHS’ slate of home games includes: Staunton, Sept. 2; Grayson County, Sept. 30; Narrows, Oct. 14; and Parry McCluer, Oct. 21.
