Covington Wins First Prize In Fireman’s Race
Covington Fire Department won the first prize in the reel race, which featured the close of the thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Virginia State Firemen’s Association. The prize is the sum of $100 and the state trumpet, which will be the property of the company until the next meeting of the association in 1924. This is the first time that the firemen from this city have ever won any of the prizes for racing.

Dr. Fleiss Shows He’s Still Tops In Clifton Forge Net Tourney
Dr. Maurice M. Fliess, Clifton Forge’s best tennis player, won the 1937 city tennis title Saturday afternoon when he swept through Jack Tucker, his final round opponent, in straight sets by scores of 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. Fleiss, who is playing a better game this year than ever before, has never been defeated in Clifton Forge tournament play. He won his first city title 12 years ago and has since annexed four more city championships, winning so far as is known, every tournament that has been held in Clifton Forge since his first victory.

Covington Taxi Driver Slain; Teens Sought
An intensive search was pressed by county, state and federal authorities for two youths today after Robert Randolph Rea, 49, of Mallow, a part time taxi driver and an Alleghany County school bus driver, was slain this morning on Route 60 three miles west of Covington at approximately 3:20. Rea was shot in the back of the head while in his taxi and his body then dumped on the ground. His billfold was missing.

Fire Leaves 3 Homeless In Callaghan
What began as a grease fire turned out to be an inferno that left three people homeless and sent one firefighter to the hospital. The Dunlap Fire Department received the call for a grease fire at 1:55 a.m. and upon arriving seven minutes later found the house engulfed in flames. The residence was the home of Neal Fridley of Callaghan located near the Callaghan Machine Shop. Firefighter Charles Bartley was taken to Alleghany Regional Hospital at 5:45 a.m. suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Allegheny Mountain String Project To Perform Sunday
The Allegheny Mountain String Project students and Southern Rail Express will be performing a benefit concert at the Masonic Amphitheatre in Clifton Forge on Sunday at 2 p.m. The concert will benefit the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic. There is no admission charge but free will donations will be accepted. The Allegheny Mountain String Project (AMSP) is a program, in partnership with the Garth Newel Music Center, to bring comprehensive string instrument education to the Alleghany Highlands.
