Fireman Arrive At Convention
The Covington Fire Department, headed by Chief Jesser, left last night on No. 2 for Fredericksburg, Va., for this year’s fire convention. Chief Jesser had 35 members in full dress uniform with the party that left last night, and many members followed this morning. Still, others are planning to leave tomorrow night in order to be in Fredericksburg in time for the race, which is scheduled for Friday, the last day of the convention. The firemen arrived in Fredericksburg about 9 o’clock this morning, and after being lined-up, were marched to their quarters.

Work Continues On Local Post Office
In conjunction with the remodeling and construction of an addition to the Covington post office, the walkway in front of the grounds is being widened. Much more space has been added along the entrance. Approximately four feet of the grass plot has been removed and cement is being laid. The addition to the post office, which has been under construction during the entire summer, has been completed and the work being done at the present is confined to interior finishing of the old section and work being done on the grounds and sidewalk.

Covington Banker Hails Bright Outlook For Area
“The economic outlook for Covington at this time looks particularly promising.” This is the view of T.I. Hardy, executive president of Covington National Bank. Hardy, who is also vice-mayor of Covington, said that not only business signs were encouraging, but that there was an improvement in the general climate of resident feeling. “There is a new spirit in the air,” he said, the feeling of ease and optimism is evident.”

Zany Follies Begin; Raise Funds For Local Cancer Society
“The Zany Follies of 1987” were presented Friday evening at Covington High School’s Curfman Hall to a theme in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Master of Ceremonies for the seventh production of the Zany Follies was Durwin Waddell who introduced the many talented local individuals who participated in the fundraiser. Zany Follies founder Aggie Albert presented a light-hearted rendition of “A Bird In A Guilded Cage.”

Two Area Soldiers Head To Afghanistan
PFC Shawn M. Wolfe, son of Christine Andrews-Wolfe of Clifton Forge and Vernon Wolfe of Selma, along with PFC Robert Wright Jr., son of Judy and Robert Wright Sr. og Covington, are among soldiers heading to Afghanistan. Wolfe and Wright are both recent Boot Camp graduates of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and are with the Mercer County based Military Police Unit headquartered in Bluefield, W.Va.
