Troy Brown Is Held For Attack
Troy Brown, the alleged party who made the attack on Deputy Sheriff Sam Brown in Tom Ellis’ restaurant recently, was given a preliminary trial this morning before Justice of the Peace B. R. Hooper, and was sent on to the circuit court. Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephenson placed bail at $3,000. Attorney Cushing made a strong protest and threatened to take the case to a higher court. Brown was charged with mayhem.

Mr. R.G. James Is Seriously Ill
R.G. James, oldest member of the Clifton Forge bar, is in a critical condition at his home on Alleghany Street as a result of a paralytic stroke which he suffered yesterday morning while preparing to leave for a vacation. It was said that he had only partially regained consciousness this morning. His son, Bleakley James of Clarendeon arrived last night to be with his father.

First Christian And Granbery Win In Church League Playoffs
First Christian squeezed by McAllister with a 1-0 shutout and Granbery edged Mt. Carmel 2-1 in nine innings in the Men’s Church League playoffs. Bob Brinkley’s third inning single was the only hit McAllister was allowed by First Christian pitcher Gordan Via. Via struck out 11. Losing pitcher Charles Lawrence allowed five hits and struck out 11. Harold Hostetter caught for the winners and Doc Altizer caught for McAllister.

Family Life Curriculum Subject For Open House
Plans for implementation of the Alleghany Highlands Schools’ eighth grade Family Life Education Curriculum were discussed during the school board’s meeting Monday. Mary Litts Burton said an open house will be held at Clifton Middle School for parents of the eighth-grade children to discuss the curriculum instructional materials and meeting with the teacher of the course. Burton said a teacher has been selected. The curriculum is divided into three main sections dealing with self-awareness, family and human growth and reproduction.

Douthat State Park Host Annual Back To School Bash
Douthat State Park held its Back to School Bash Saturday. One of the event’s most popular attractions is the Cardboard Boat Regatta. Below are the winners from left, Best in Show; McGuire Oliver, Skyler Barnett, Rayne Barnett and Maddie Martin; First place; Aaron Mahr; Third Place; Josie Rossback; Second Place Rachel Murie and William Tuttle, who received a prize for trying to keep his Titanic afloat, but ultimately like its namesake, it sank and came apart. Standing in the back row are Charlie Conner and Katie Gibson park rangers.
