It’s unreal to think that summer is almost gone already and a schools are starting up.
With classes starting in session in some areas, that means the 2022-23 athletics season is underway.
Well for some sports, the 2022 Fall sports season has already begun.
Alleghany, Bath County, and Covington High School’s have all already played in-season golf matches. While all three school’s have each participated in a volleyball jamboree or a scrimmage.
This is also the last Fall athletics season for Alleghany County and Covington City before the two schools merge together next year.
It makes for an intriguing Fall season with lots of storylines surrounding each sport.
In football, Jake Phillips will begin his first year not only as the Bath County athletic director, but also as head coach of the Chargers varsity football team. Phillips who left Staunton High School several months ago for Bath County will look to bring back the Charger winnings ways. The Chargers last winning season came in 2010. Phillips takes over for Dillon Fry who coach the team for two seasons.
In cross country, a year removed from the team winning the Regional 2C championship in boys and girls (first time the girls won in 30 years), the Alleghany Mountaineers will look to maintain their success. Last year the Mountaineers had two girls finish in the top 20. The girls finished second in the states as the runners-up, while the boys finished in fourth. There’s no question, head coach Jeremy Bartley will have his runners this season prepared and ready for another run at not only the regional championship, but the states as well.
These are just a few storylines for the Fall High School sports season. There are plenty more and some we could talk about in future editions.
And of course one of most anticipated games being the Brackman Cup. That is a storyline in itself since it is the last time the crosstown rival Mountaineers and Cougars play each other on the gridiron.
It is quite the exciting time and quite the exciting Fall sports season ahead.
