The Alleghany-Bath Highland Bar Association (ABH bar) will hold its Senior Law Day (SLD) on Wed., Aug. 10, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC).
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College was renamed Mountain Gateway Community College on July 1.
Bill Wilson, a Covington attorney and former delegate to the Virginia House of Delegates, said, “The Alleghany Highlands, Bath Bar was started in 2001.”
He continued, “The program was adopted by the Virginia State Bar and became a statewide program.”
Wilson concluded, “It has been a great thing for seniors and their caregivers in this area and statewide.”
The last SLD program promoted by the ABH Bar was in 2019 prior to COVID-19 that resulted in an interruption of the ABH Bar’s programs.
Wilson will serve as the moderator for the panel of attorneys and others who will provide useful information to seniors and caregivers about issues impacting them.
Dr. John Rainone, president of MGCC, will welcome those attending and introduce Stephanie Grana, president of the Virginia State Bar (VSB). Grana will introduce the program.
The VSB will provide attendees copies of the “Senior Citizens Handbook,” and a free lunch will be served.
The program held in 2019 was videotaped and added to the VSB website to benefit other bar associations and anyone interested in the bar’s activities, ones that help seniors and caregivers.
The ABH Bar is comprised of attorneys Jeanne M. Hepler, Bill Parks, Kristen McConnell and Wilson who are being assisted by Patrice Jefferson, director of the League of Older Americans; and pastors: Nathan Miller, Johnny Mize, Steve Noel and Bill Hartsfield.
The pastors are helping seniors register for the meeting, and a telephone number for registering has been set up: (540) 962-4529. The registration process will help organizers plan for the luncheon.
A printed program will list businesses that sponsor the event, and banners will be erected at MGCC.
Taylor Baker, president of the ABH Bar, remarked, “I think that the Senior Law Day program provides an invaluable service and informative program benefiting all those that attend but especially our older citizens.”
He added, “We are so happy to be able to once again provide this program after two years of absence.”
Rainone held an unveiling ceremony for MGCC on July 1 and marched with some of his athletic coaches and athletic director who displayed MGCC’s banner in the Clifton Forge Main Street’s Fourth of July parade.
At the unveiling ceremony, Rainone remarked, “Our name has changed, but not our mission.”
The mission to host such events as SLD continues for MGCC just as AHB bar continues its mission to help seniors and caregivers.
